Abstract
The world is entering a period of unprecedented change, perhaps greater than any time in history. Not only is the acceleration of new technologies impacting a wide range of industries, but it is accompanied by the development of environmental and social disruptions.Increasingly, digital transformation is becoming a question of survival, with firms having to re-envision their organizational architecture and associated Information Technology infrastructure. This has been necessitated as firms face adaptation to hypercompetitive markets along with technological and social changes.Successful digital transformation is not simply a technological activity, but requires the firm to develop new capabilities, organizational processes, business models and value proposition to become more agile and maintain competitiveness. A critical aspect of this transformation is strategic planning and implementation. In this paper we examine digital transformation through the experience of a Canadian publisher, IT World Canada (ITWC), as it goes through its continuing transformation from a conventional to fully digital publisher, we specifically discuss its approach to strategic planning for transformation and its approach to implementation. We conclude with a discussion of how this has impacted the firm and lessons learned in this experience.
