Cette revue critique de l’ouvrage Pourquoi la loi 101 est un échec de Frédéric Lacroix remet en question l’approche ethnicisante et idéologiquement réductrice qu’utilise l’auteur pour analyser les dynamiques linguistiques au Québec. Elle exhorte à mieux réfléchir aux enjeux de la situation actuelle et future de la langue française au Québec en les décrivant dans toute leur complexité et en tenant compte de leurs multiples facettes. Cette revue expose non seulement la fragilité des postulats épistémologiques, méthodologiques et conceptuels sur lesquels s’appuie l’auteur de l’ouvrage pour étayer sa démonstration du caractère catastrophique de la situation actuelle du français au Québec, mais remet également en question le cadre théorique de l’ouvrage, reposant sur le concept de surcomplétude institutionnelle. La note critique propose un regard alternatif qui met en lumière quelques-unes des dimensions et perspectives théoriques et méthodologiques dont ne tient pas compte l’auteur et qui sont pourtant fondamentales si l’on veut faire un examen plus complet des dynamiques et des pratiques qui contribuent à l’évolution de la situation linguistique au Québec.
