Abstract
El anuncio del aumento de las tasas de matriculacion universitaria por parte del gobierno provincial de Quebec desencadeno una oleada de protestas estudiantiles. Los estudiantes en huelga, denominados «cuadrados rojos», en referencia al cuadrado de fieltro rojo que llevaban en sus ojales, que simboliza la negativa a tener que sumirse «completamente en numeros rojos» para estudiar, denunciaron no solo el aumento de las tasas de matriculacion, sino tambien el sistema de endeudamiento individual que acompana a esta medida. La decision del gobierno invertia de hecho la ecuacion progresista: ya no seria la comunidad la encargada de asumir la mayor parte de los costos asociados con la educacion superior, ya que la sociedad en su conjunto se beneficia de tener ciudadanos informados. Ahora serian los graduados quienes, a titulo individual, resultaban ser los beneficiarios de su formacion y por lo tanto tenian que financiarla directamente. A traves de su victoriosa lucha, los «cuadrados rojos» rechazaron asi la vision del mundo que establece que el credito es el mejor instrumento para cualquier proyecto de vida y que la educacion es una forma de inversion financiera.
