Le commentaire de Strauss sur le Hiéron a déjà fait l’objet d’études nombreuses, mais je constate que la plupart de ces études ne portent pas sur l’interprétation que Strauss donne du Hiéron, mais plutôt sur le débat entre Strauss et A. Kojève à la suite de la publication de On tyranny (1948). Or ce débat ne concerne le Hiéron que de façon très indirecte et je n’hésiterais pas à affirmer qu’il n’apporte rien à l’élucidation du Hiéron. Tout se passe comme si les commentateurs, à quelques exceptions près, renonçaient à confronter le commentaire de Strauss au texte même du Hiéron et à en évaluer ainsi la pertinence et l’intérêt. Je déplore que la plupart des commentateurs prennent la lecture straussienne pour «argent comptant», c’est-à-dire comme si elle ne méritait pas d’être évaluée à l’aune du texte de Xénophon, et qu’ils la prennent comme point de départ de leurs analyses sur le phénomène de la tyrannie. Ma lecture de Strauss n’est pas celle d’un politologue qui spécule à partir du commentaire Strauss, mais celle d’un lecteur attentif de Xénophon qui se demande si l’interprétation de Strauss résiste à l’épreuve du texte, c’est-à-dire si elle peut s’autoriser, ou non, du texte même de Xénophon.
