Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Ruins are often perceived as something of the past, as something of historical value, ignoring the present-day environment of these ruins. This article provides a glimpse into the livelihood surrounding ruins in post-Soviet Russia by examining the quality of ‘tlen.’ Tlen  is a Russian word that translated as “ashes” and refers to processes of decay, corrosion, and corruption, both in physical and metaphorical sense – of abandonment, of lacking care and attention. Thus, the quality of tlen  refers to complex feelings of profound sadness or to something bittersweet – something one would want to get rid of, but that is simultaneously “above” the mundanity of consumerlife. In this article, I further explore contemporary uses of the quality of tlen  in post-Soviet Russia, to understand the historical and social context in which it acquired its meaning and its contemporary cultural and artistic expressions. I argue that, while generally perceived as an undesirable state, tlen  is also often imbued with positive moral and aesthetic values. I draw on publicly available art and content, as well as on my personal experiences and those of people I know.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
