Abstract
Dès la redécouverte des sculptures de l’Antiquité tardive et du haut Moyen Âge, au cours de l’époque moderne, elles ont donné lieu à des jugements contradictoires. Considérées comme grossières, elles ont été regardées aussi avec fierté, en tant que témoins de l’ancienneté d’un territoire. Cette vision a été approfondie tout au long du XIXe siècle et pendant une bonne partie du siècle suivant, avec tous les écueils nationalistes et sectaires que pouvait comporter cette perspective. Puis les œuvres ont bénéficié d’une réévaluation de leur esthétique, notamment sous l’influence des révolutions artistiques des années 1900. À partir de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, le cadre épistémologique a été bouleversé par l’apport des méthodes archéologiques et archéométriques. Mais notre champ d’étude réclame une nouvelle approche, notamment sous la forme de corpus complets et reliés à la question de l’architecture.
