Bastante tinta ha corrido por cuenta de quienes han reflexionado sobre una de las obras mas importantes en la filosofia politica de los ultimos tiempos: la Teoria de la Justicia de John Rawls. Si se tiene en cuenta que durante algo mas de cuarenta anos la filosofia politica contemporanea ha estado fuertemente marcada por la discusion de la obra de este autor, sin duda la Teoria de la Justicia de John Rawls puede ser vista como una obra paradigmatica, pero, asimismo, algo enigmatica. Paradigmatica en el sentido en que su pensamiento consituye una propuesta no menor que justifica y sostiene convincente-mente un proyecto novedoso de liberalismo politico. Enigmatica en la medida en que no resulta facil adscribir claramente su pensamiento en una u otra corriente filosofica. A primera vista parece ser concluyente la observacion de no pocos de los interpretes, seguidores y disidentes del autor, libertarios y comunitarios, que han encontrado su pensamiento como una continuacion del esfuerzo de la Ilustracion por basar las intuiciones morales del agente en una concepcion especifica y fundamental de la naturaleza humana, es decir, como un proyecto neokantiano que busca ante todo fundamentar tales intuiciones en la nocion de “racionalidad”196. Esta afirmacion constituye una de las premisas mas importantes que expone la critica comunitaria a la obra de John Rawls, segun la cual “es imposible defender las instituciones politicas liberales sobre la sola base de una teoria individualista de la naturaleza del yo”.
