Abstract
L’archétypal conflit œdipien de générations est immémorial : latent avec la pandémie et les polémiques sur la priorité vaccinale des anciens sur les jeunes, il prend des tours visibles au tournant des xvie et xviie siècles où la découverte du Nouveau Monde a fait du nôtre l’ancien, matérialisant et métaphorisant, dans tous les arts et la société, des couples d’opposés déclinés en antithèses neuf/révolu, moderne/démodé. Revendiquant contre l’ordre ancien l’invention, la nouveauté, ce culte baroque du neuf implique une nouvelle culture du temps : de la science à la conscience, les perfectionnements du miroir et de l’horloge, donnent une nouvelle perception de soi, du temps compté au temps mesuré, à vivre, et d’un âge repérable en reflet personnel : mode des autoportraits permettant la désolante ou consolante comparaison avec autrui. Mais le sentiment de l’âge rend sensible à la jeunesse l’injustice d’une société patriarcale où règnent les barbons, maîtres du pouvoir et de la fortune : rivalité père/fils, antagonisme entre jeune et vieux, vision et aversion des vieillards, « jeunisme » que dénoncera Rousseau au crépuscule du Baroque : archéologie de notre modernité.
