Abstract
Desde hace muchos anos ha existido particular interes en el uso de ligantes alternativos para reemplazar parte del ligante bituminoso en las mezclas asfalticas. Con el embargo de petroleo en los anos 70, se investigo el uso de azufre como producto sustituto en Norteamerica con diferentes proyectos construidos en los EEUU y Canada. A pesar del exito demostrado, no existio un mayor desarrollo de las mezclas asfalticas extendidas con azufre despues de los anos 80 porque los factores economicos cambiaron a favor del uso de las mezclas asfalticas tradicionales. Ahora existe un renovado interes en ligantes alternativos por razones economicas, medioambientales y para mejorar el desempeno(a) de las mismas. Shell Specialties se ha enfocado, especialmente en la ultima decada, en novedosos proyectos a gran escala que maximicen el valor potencial del azufre, siendo Shell Thiopave un ejemplo de lo mencionado. El desarrollo de la tecnologia de Shell Thiopave utiliza un producto solido que al ser introducido a la mezcla asfaltica a una temperatura similar a una mezcla tibia permite la utilizacion de azufre para reemplazar entre el 20 y el 25% del volumen de betun en el concreto asfaltico(b) minimizando el riesgo de problemas potenciales en el medioambiente y la salud de los trabajadores. El azufre ademas modifica las caracteristicas mecanicas de las mezclas asfalticas, disminuyendo su sensibilidad a cambios de temperaturas, mejorando su resistencia a las deformaciones permanentes, aumentando su rigidez a altas temperaturas bajo cargas pesadas/ lentas y aumentando su resistencia al derrame de combustible. El objeto del presente trabajo es mostrar la evolucion de las mezclas asfalticas modificadas con azufre desde los 70 hasta hoy asi como tambien la actualidad en cuanto a su diseno, produccion y construccion, incluyendo algunas recientes investigaciones como ejemplo.
