Abstract
The article discusses the play "Cénie" by French novelist, playwright and salon hostess Françoise de Graffigny. It was first performed in 1750 at the Comédie Française in Paris, France to widespread popular acclaim and praise. After a final performance in 1762, the play was never publicly performed again after being charged with plagiarism for its resemblance to the 1747 play "La Gouvernante" by Nivelle de La Chaussée. The public debate between Enlightenment authors Voltaire and Denis Diderot in the 1740s and 1750s regarding the standard practice of rewriting works by other authors is also considered.
