A utilização tradicional de plantas para o tratamento de afecções animais é importante pelas suas potencialidades de utilização em pastagens medicinais, no desenvolvimento potencial de novas formulações farmacêuticas veterinárias para agricultura biológica e na preservação e valorização do conhecimento tradicional do Alentejo. \nFoi efetuado um levantamento etnobotânico para aplicação no tratamento de animais, na região alentejana, tomando como base 56 entrevistas semi-estruturadas realizadas entre Julho 2011 e Abril 2012. O informante médio tem como perfil ser do sexo masculino, com mais de 70 anos, frequência do ensino básico e profissões ligadas à agricultura. As utilizações de plantas referidas destinam-se maioritariamente a tratar afecções de bovinos, equinos, ovinos e caprinos. O tratamento de traumatismos externos e as afecções gastro-intestinais foram as mais citadas. As famílias botânicas mais citadas foram Malvaceae, Hypericaceae e Asteraceae. Destacam-se pela frequência de citação: Malva sp. e Lavatera sp, Hypericum tomentosum, Olea europaea e Xolantha tuberaria. Foram também referidas diversas misturas de plantas. \nNa maioria dos casos (78%), as utilizações descritas já não são utilizadas há mais de 30 anos, o que justifica a recolha deste conhecimento tradicional.
