Dans la presse spécialisée sur le vêtement au XIXe siècle, le courrier des modes veut assurer une médiation de la rumeur ; dans la presse à grand tirage, le même courrier joue toujours sur la réception du lectorat et le confinement de la rumeur, avec en plus un rôle important prêté aux annonces-réclames expansives et une différenciation du rôle des lecteurs femmes ou hommes. De ce va-et-vient de la parole publique reprise, empruntée, citée, respectée, critiquée, dans une multitude de publications consacrées à la mode, naît la rumeur dont dépend le discours médiatique sur le vêtement. Bien que limité dans cette étude au sujet du vêtement, le discours de la presse du XIXe siècle se montre ouvert à la modélisation par la rumeur publique, ce qui représente, à notre avis, une étape obligatoire dans l’évolution du journalisme moderne. L’impact de l’opinion publique partiellement assumée par le concept de rumeur ne cessera de s’accroître dans la presse moderne et contemporaine.
