Abstract
Accidents involving water mains are increasingly commonplace.It is estimated that only in Canada and the United States, on average, 700 main breaks per day occur.These events added generated a maintenance loss in order of six billions of canadian dollars in about ten years.In addition to the financial loss, there is a concern about the scarcity of water resources and the image of water distribution system operators.The need to know the operational conditions of a water transportation infrastructure and to know the possible impacts of operating under these conditions is essential for the prevention of accidents.In this context the present work seeks to develop indexes related to the operation and limits of transport infrastructure in order to be able to assess their operational conditions and to help decision makers in risk assessment.The evaluation indices were based on the concept of resilience and were created from the infrastructure's parameters and the results obtained for the transient runoff and were later applied to the Canoas System in the city of Franca/SP.For the calculation of the transitory flow, a hydraulic model of the system in question was made, using Bentley HAMMER® CONNECT Edition software.The indices have proven to be an effective tool for perceiving the solicitation level that the pipeline is subjected to and can become a tool for designers then designing a new infrastructure.
