Comme je le raconte dans mes entretiens avec Louis-André Dorion, publiés sous le titre Rendre raison aumythe (Montréal, Liber, 1999), j’ai fait mes études en philosophie à l’Université de Montréal entre 1965 et 1968. Après quelques années de Révolution tranquille, le professeur Vianney Décarie était devenu le premier directeur laïc du département de philosophie. Et il avait ouvert le département sur l’extérieur en invitant notamment Charles Taylor, qui donnait des cours sur Kant et Hegel, et Paul Ricœur. À l’époque, Paul Ricœur venait régulièrement enseigner à l’Université de Chicago. Or, la ligne Paris-Chicago d’Air Canada passait par Montréal, qui constituait une étape essentielle. Paul Ricœur profitait de cette occasion, et venait à Montréal à l’aller et au retour ; puis, quand il était à Chicago, il venait chaque semaine à Montréal pour donner des cours au département de philosophie. C’est à la maîtrise, c’est-à-dire en 1967 et 1968, que j’eus le privilège de suivre son cours sur l’origine de la volonté dans l’Antiquité. Ce cours, je le suivis d’autant plus attentivement que j’avais été chargé d’en rédiger une version imprimée la plus fidèle possible. Le résultat fut probant, car Paul Ricœur me demanda d’utiliser cette version rédigée de son cours pour ses étudiants de Nanterre.
