Ce qui est canadien, dans l'écriture de Munro, est le rapport entre le monde (les fermes, villes, routes) et la terre (le sol et la végétation, les lacs, les rivières de l'Amérique du Nord qui s'appelle "le Canada"). Obsédée par les allers et les retours, les inscriptions et les ratures, l'écriture de Munro est particulièrement canadienne, du moins le supposons nous, par la force de la friction entre deux forces fondamentales et apparemment opposées. Ses recueils de nouvelles attestent une conception du temps géologique sur lequel est posé un monde architectural éphémère et superficiel duquel elle tente passionnément de sécuriser les traces contre leur disparition imminente. Munro dé-sédimente infatigablement ces espaces clos, sollicite leurs événements secrets, les mettant à nu, et affirme la survie indestructible de la vie. Munro écrit l'environnement, imbriquant l'espace canadien dans l'Anthropocene (l'ère de l'humain dans le temps géologique) et l'espace-temps littéraire dans l'imagination (l'époque de la trace).
