Le soutien accord l'URSS en vertu du prt-bail amricain et de l'aide mutuelle canadienne pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale a t en grande partie ignor par les historiens. S'appuyant sur les vastes ressources archivistiques situes Ottawa et Washington, cet article dcrit les travaux visant fournir l'URSS, par la route du Pacifique Nord, la moiti des approvisionnements qu'elle a reus des tats-Unis au cours de la guerre. L'article traite notamment des dfis de l'environnement, de la route et ses difficults de navigation et de logistique, de l'organisation de la voie de ravitaillement du prt-bail aux tats-Unis et de la fourniture et la rparation de navires, dont plusieurs taient dangereusement susceptibles aux fissures.
