Cet article décrit l’expérience de développement des connaissances en management/stratégie qui a eu lieu aux États-Unis, en particulier pour répondre à la crise générée par la grande dépression de 1929, et qui a mené au développement de Harvard Business School (HBS). Les expériences Hawthorne et les réflexions sur la direction des entreprises qui ont pris place à Cambridge, Massachussetts, ont généré des résultats et une démarche de développement de la connaissance qui ont marqué le pays et le monde. Cette expérience est ensuite utilisée comme référence pour réfléchir aux besoins en matière de développement des connaissances et d’une pensée stratégique autonome en Afrique. Une démarche de recherche clinique et la description de situations exemplaires sous la forme de cas peuvent être aussi fécondes qu’au Massachussetts et à HBS. Le courage des élites et leur capacité à se parler à travers une recherche sur les processus concrets du développement seraient les conditions qui donneraient vie à l’initiative entreprise par la RISO dans ce numéro.
