The third and last volume of the Champion edition of Helvétius’s complete works brings together verse epistles, a poem, and a notebook, in addition to some three hundred letters. The letters and relevant annotation are largely reprinted from David Smith’s masterful five-volume edition of the Correspondance générale d’Helvétius (Toronto and Oxford: University of Toronto Press and Voltaire Foundation, 1981–2004). Nineteen unpublished letters, however, are added to those known from Smith’s edition. Addressed, for the most part, to Anne-Catherine de Ligniville d’Autricourt, Helvétius’s wife, these letters fill several gaps in one of the most passionate epistolary exchanges of the eighteenth century: as tender and affectionate as some of Diderot’s letters to Sophie Volland, they are also rich in inside jokes and erotic allusions, an aspect that brings them closer to some of the billets exchanged between Voltaire and Mme Denis.
