Dans un contexte d’augmentation des risques de submersion et d’érosion côtières en France et au Québec, la façon dont les dommages sont indemnisés apparaît comme un facteur crucial dans les choix résidentiels. Aussi, une recherche doctorale en géographie a été lancée en octobre 2020 sur l’influence des systèmes d’indemnisation, par le biais d’assurances privées ou d’aides publiques, dans les choix résidentiels côtiers, sujet jusqu’alors peu abordé dans la recherche académique. Cet article propose de présenter les prémisses de cette recherche en en précisant les méthodes et en introduisant l’étude des systèmes d’indemnisation français et québécois. En France, comme au Québec, les pouvoirs publics sont impliqués dans les systèmes d’indemnisation, mais selon des degrés différents qui pourraient alors jouer un rôle sur les choix résidentiels côtiers. Alors que l’État est le principal réassureur des compagnies d’assurances en France en cas d’évènements majeurs et qu’il réglemente les contrats privés, l’État provincial du Québec offre un programme d’aide en complément d’un marché libre et concurrentiel
