Ce voyage tait conu comme rponse autrichienne aux voyages de Cook, un voyage imprial de dcouverte autour du monde qui devait comprendre l'exploitation des possibilits commerciales du commerce des fourrures sur la cte nordouest et le commerce avec la Chine et le Japon. Zimmermann a t rejoint Trieste par trois de ses anciens compagnons de bord sous Cook --George Dixon, George Gilpin et William Walker, chacun destin naviguer comme officier sur le navire imprial et royal Cobenzell. Les lettres et le journal de Zimmermann qui ont survcu fournissent une source valable cette tude des origines du commerce maritime des fourrures sur la cte nord-ouest.
