Abstract
Nicole Krauss is perhaps as well known for the books she's yet to write as she is for her four current, internationally celebrated novels: Forest Dark (2017), Great House (2010), The History of Love (2005), and Man Walks Into a Room (2002). In 2010 she was chosen as one of The New Yorker 's “20 under 40” authors who “are, or will be, key to their generation,” and, three years earlier, Granta named her one of the “Best Young American Novelists.” All of her novels have either won or been shortlisted for literary prizes. The forward-facing nature of Krauss's fame recognizes the innovative and influential nature of her work. Krauss writes not only with a sensitivity to loneliness and loss, but also with the conviction that if anything can bridge the seemingly unassailable distance between people or make life worth living after deep suffering, it is fiction. As the author asserts in an interview, “literature affords us this absolutely unique possibility – in no other moment in life … in no other art form can you step so directly, so vividly without any mediation into another's inner life.” In other words, for Krauss, literature is the medium of empathy: it is the only way we can come close to knowing “what it is to be another person.” Krauss's works help to shape an emerging novel form, the braided narrative, that is particularly fitted to engage these questions of recognition and connection.
