L’aménagement flexible des classes a gagné en popularité dans la dernière décennie au Québec, mais peu de recherches se sont intéressées à comprendre les processus réflexifs qui sous-tendent les choix de stations de travail chez l’élève. Ce projet vise à décrire quelles stations de travail sont utilisées par les élèves et à explorer les critères et processus déterminant leurs choix d’une place. Un devis mixte, séquentiel explicatif a été privilégié. La fréquence d’utilisation de 14 stations de travail a été colligée auprès de 13 élèves d’une classe de 5e année pendant 3 journées. Des entrevues qualitatives ont été effectuées auprès de 9 d’entre eux et analysées selon une méthode d'analyse de contenu afin d’explorer leur processus réflexif. Les stations de travail de groupe ainsi que celles offrant diverses postures sont majoritairement choisies. Les élèves effectuent un cheminement réflexif marqué par trois phases : exploration, découverte et savoirs d’expérience pour arriver à faire un choix réfléchi en fonction de critères de sélection qu’ils ont élaborés pour prioriser leurs apprentissages. Considérant le cheminement réflexif de l’élève, les conditions de la classe flexible pourraient favoriser l’autorégulation et le développement des connaissances métacognitives.
