Abstract
Cet article est le récit d’une demande d’inscription au titre des monuments historiques pour un élément de patrimoine du xxe siècle situé en zone frontalière franco-suisse. Les postures adoptées pourraient traduire un enthousiasme pour la modernité et un consensus pour les dispositifs de protection. Il n’en est rien, et des considérations historiques, géographiques, politiques et culturelles sont à mobiliser pour comprendre les motivations de cette démarche. Celle-ci est surprenante dans un contexte local de défiance vis-à-vis des politiques et instances nationales et fédérales, mais également à l’égard des approches patrimoniales.La rénovation du téléphérique du Salève, lancée en 2016, cristallise un sentiment d’appartenance à un même territoire de part et d’autre de la frontière. Sa modernité, masquée par des travaux successifs, s’en trouve désormais pleinement assumée. La gouvernance genevoise (franco-suisse) du groupement local de coopération transfrontalière (GLCT) veut la restituer dans toute sa radicalité. Inauguré en 1932, l’année de la confirmation de la zone franche au détriment de la France, le téléphérique est l’expression d’une histoire singulière, ni française ni suisse, mais genevoise.
