Cet essai propose d’abord une revue des positions critiques de Marilyn Randall par rapport au roman Trou de mémoire (1968) d’Hubert Aquin. Je m’attarde plus spécifiquement au concept de biolectographie, que j’ampute de son préfixe pour penser une lectographie, c’est-à-dire une lecture non plus axée sur la recherche de l’image de l’auteur dans les marges de la fiction, mais sur la responsabilité du lecteur ou de la lectrice. Trou de mémoire est un roman policier hors norme, car l’identité du criminel est rapidement découverte. Les mobiles des crimes qui structurent l’intrigue sont par ailleurs obscurs. Prenant appui sur la critique policière théorisée et pratiquée par Pierre Bayard, je propose une enquête qui reconstruit un portrait exhaustif des motivations des personnages, sans épargner l’examen du désir du lecteur. Cette insistance sur la rencontre avec le texte donne naissance au personnage conceptuel que je nomme le lecteur détective. Aux commandes de l’enquête, le lecteur détective revisitent une fois de plus les énigmes de Trou de mémoire, plongeant dans le point de fuite du texte, moins pour proposer une solution que pour arpenter la logique fantasmatique mise en scène par l’écriture romanesque.
