Cet article revient en détail sur les différents faux départs de la bande dessinée québécoise (BDQ), qui existe dès le début du xx e siècle, mais ne se conceptualise en tant que telle que dès la fin des années 1960. À partir de cette période, plusieurs mouvements, expérimentations et revues naissent dans la province en affirmant une BDQ (ou « kébécoise ») autonome de ses influences états-uniennes et franco-belges. Ce discours, porté par les auteurs et repris à bas bruit par les médias généralistes, accompagne de multiples créations qui apparaissent comme autant de naissances affichées, semblant ignorer ce qui a pu exister quelques années auparavant. Une situation qui crée un effet contradictoire, entre bouillonnement créatif reconnu et échecs commerciaux quasi constants. L’évolution de la BDQ s’inscrit dans un contexte général d’affirmation identitaire au Québec, particulièrement présent dans les années 1970. Il va permettre une certaine visibilité de la BDQ sur plusieurs années, avec notamment la parution du premier ouvrage dédié à ce sujet en 1975. L’étude approfondie d’un corpus de textes critiques et discours médiatiques de la période montre cependant que la BDQ ne s’affirme pas d’emblée et connaît son lot d’annonces, d’échec et de retours. Il faudra finalement dépasser un discours strictement identitaire pour que l’écosystème créé à ce moment débouche sur un premier succès structurant pour la profession, avec la revue Croc lancée en 1979, après de multiples annonces de (re)naissance.
