La campagne de 1872 du Franz met en avant un certain nombre de points concernant la transformation de la pche australienne de coquilles perlires au 19me sicle. En 1872, ses modes de fonctionnement, ses relations sociales et ses arrangements financiers taient quasi-identiques ceux pratiqus auparavant dans le Pacifique occidental dans la pche la baleine et dans les idustries du bois de santal et de la bche de mer (trpang). Cependant, les rapports humains bord se transformaient tant la pche demandait un investissement accru et une main d'oeuvre plus exprimente. Les capitaines des bateaux de pche de coquilles perlires devaient faire face des rgimes de normalisation changeant et des dcalages des centres d'influence vers des frontires maritimes lointaines. Tout manquement de s'y adapter pouvait prouver dsastreux.
