Si est classique ce qui sert l'usage des classes , pour reprendre la formule de Taine (1868, p. iv), alors John Stuart Mill est rcemment redevenu un classique du canon philosophique franais.En efet, aprs un purgatoire de plusieurs dcennies durant lequel la rfrence l'oeuvre de Mill avait quasi disparu du paysage intellectuel franais 1 , sa rapparition sur la liste des auteurs du programme de philosophie des classes terminales en 2003 2 et la mise de plusieurs de ses oeuvres au concours de l'agrgation de philosophie 3 -deux oprations curriculaires faussement banales quand on connat la fonction encore aujourd'hui cruciale de lgitimation symbolique de l'institution scolaire en France -marquent sans doute un regain d'intrt pour les ides de ce penseur, qui ont aussi bnici d'une attention renouvele pour les traditions utilitariste et librale 4 .Malheureusement, un tel mouvement de redcouverte n'a pas encore suscit un renouveau substantiel des tudes milliennes de langue franaise, comme l'indique l'absence criante d'ouvrages introductifs destination d'un public tudiant ou d'un lectorat cultiv qui permettraient de saisir dans toute sa richesse et son originalit la pense de Mill. 1 Par exemple, entre 1940 2003, il ne semble y avoir eu que cinq thses de doctorat franaises consacres Mill (trois en philosophie et deux en histoire de la littrature anglaise).2 Le programme de 1973 ayant fait disparatre Mill de la liste des auteurs tudier avec les lves.
