Cette étude sur les conceptions démographiques allemandes des XVIIIe et XIXe s. s'inscrit dans un courant de recherche émergent, visant à renouveler l'histoire intellectuelle d'une période particulièrement riche en débats et en évolutions, courant auquel participent à la fois historiens et historiens du droit ou des sciences politiques.L'objectif de M.F.est d'étudier si les réflexions en matière de théorie et de politique démographique ont eu des répercussions sur les débats concernant le droit matrimonial et sur la liberté de mariage.L'auteur utilise pour cela un très vaste corpus de sources comprenant à la fois des traités de caméralisme, de police médicale, d'économie politique et de droit, sur une période allant du milieu du XVIIIe s. aux années 1870.Il décrit en introduction son travail comme relevant d'une histoire des idées qui se démarque de la pratique traditionnelle du genre à la fois par une approche interdisciplinaire (comme en témoigne la diversité des sources mobilisées) et par la volonté de ne pas se cantonner à l'étude des « grands noms », mais d'englober des auteurs moins connus et, pour cette raison, plus représentatifs de l'état moyen des savoirs et des réflexions d'une époque donnée.
