Jusqu’à la fin des années 1960, la méthodologie qualitative s’est en bonne partie développée grâce aux avancées de la sociologie américaine, et plus spécifiquement grâce à l’apport de la tradition de Chicago et de l’interactionnisme symbolique. Au cours des années 1960 et 1970, le courant interactionniste effectue une percée importante dans certains champs comme ceux de la sociologie de la déviance et de la criminologie. Dans cet article, je traite des contributions de la tradition de Chicago à l’étude des réalités sociales, mais également au développement des méthodes qualitatives et de la sociologie de la déviance. En plus de leur conception interactive de l’acteur et du monde social, de la place accordée à la recherche empirique, de la valorisation des méthodes qualitatives et d’une introduction aux thèses constructivistes de la déviance, le texte fait ressortir deux aspects majeurs de cette tradition : l’importance d’être à la fois à proximité et à distance des points de vue et des expériences des acteurs de manière à mieux les saisir et les objectiver; la tension dans ce courant entre s’inscrire dans la mouvance du positivisme scientifique et s’en dégager tout au long de la première moitié du 20e siècle et encore davantage à partir des années 60.
