Résumé L’apprentissage est essentiel pour faire face à notre environnement changeant. Le cortex préfrontal régule les fonctions exécutives, et, lorsqu’il est compromis, cela affecte chaque phase du processus d’apprentissage : l’encodage, la consolidation et le rappel. Cette revue présente des résultats récents sur le rôle du cortex préfrontal à chaque phase d’apprentissage, dans les contextes de la mémoire déclarative et de la modalité visuelle. À l’encodage, le cortex préfrontal se révèle important à deux égards. Premièrement, en améliorant, par un mécanisme descendant, le rendement métabolique et électrophysiologique des régions perceptives primaires. Deuxièmement, en effectuant une réorganisation sémantique d’informations, augmentant la profondeur de l’encodage et la qualité de la trace mnésique. Avec le temps, certaines informations acquises deviennent permanentes par la consolidation. Lors de ce processus, favorisé par le sommeil, l’engramme se déplace de l’hippocampe vers le cortex préfrontal médian, où il sera plus stable. Finalement, le cortex préfrontal facilite le rappel par l’utilisation de regroupements sémantiques et l’inhibition d’informations distrayantes. Les données présentées suggèrent que le cortex préfrontal optimise l’apprentissage à chaque étape du processus. Les recherches à venir devraient révéler des modèles intégrateurs incluant le cortex préfrontal, mais ne se limitant pas à celui-ci.
