Naïma Ghermani 1Éminent spécialiste de Lucas Cranach l'Ancien, A.T. est connu pour avoir fait voler en éclats un préjugé tenace dans les travaux d'historiens d'art (et d'historiens pourrait-on ajouter) : l'idée que l'appartenance confessionnelle d'un peintre était fixe et lui aurait interdit de travailler pour des commanditaires catholiques.Nombreuses en effet ont été les études qui ne cessaient d'interroger un mystère qui, comme l'a montré la thèse de l'auteur publiée en 1989 et intitulée « Le Cranach catholique » (Der katholische Cranach), n'en était pas un : comment Cranach, peintre de la Réformation, ami de Luther, avait-il pu, avec d'autres comparses, continuer à travailler pour des commanditaires catholiques, et non les moindres, alors que la bataille confessionnelle faisait rage ?En rappelant l'importance du marché catholique de l'image, A.T. démontrait ainsi que les identités confessionnelles étaient loin d'être figées dans le premier tiers du XVIe siècle, que l'on pouvait être un « chrétien entre deux chaires » et que des intérêts autres que religieux entraient en compétition : prestige des commanditaires, valeur de l'art en tant qu'objet d'art, début du collectionnisme, ou plus prosaïquement intérêt financier à ne pas tourner le dos à un marché de l'art si avide en images pieuses.
