TRACKING CEREBRAL ACTIVITY OF OLDER ADULTS WITH OR WITHOUT CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTORS USING FNIRS

Abstract
It has been argued that neurovascular coupling has a role in the maintenance of gait speed in aging and that proxy measures of this capacity might facilitate early identification of age-associated changes during walking. The goal of the current longitudinal study was to track changes in oxygenated [HbO] and deoxygenated hemoglobin [HbR] during dual-task walking in a sample of older adults with or without cardiovascular risk factors. The sample (n = 49; 42% F; Mage = 67.91 yrs) included individuals without cardiovascular risk factors (CRF) (HC: n = 11), with 1+ CRF (n = 22), and coronary patients (CP: n = 13). At Baseline, 6 months, and 1 year, physical and neuropsychological assessments were completed. Neuroimaging data was also acquired with a portable fNIRS system that was worn during: over ground walking at a self-selected pace (SW), standing cognitive performance of a 2-back task (SC) and during dual-task walking (DT: SW+SC). Baseline behavioral data revealed slowed gait speed (m/s) from SW to dual walk (p <.001) without significant changes in cognitive accuracy from SC to dual (p = .150). After signal filtering and [Hb] quantification, a GLM-based approach was applied to [HbO] and [HbR] variations and results demonstrate a network involving bilateral ventro-medial prefrontal cortices (PFC) and medial dorsolateral PFC with increasing extent across the SW, SC, and DT experimental conditions, respectively. The pattern was maintained across the different cardiovascular profiles. Qualitatively, the 1+CRF and the CP display bilateral anterior PFC activity that is not evident in the HC.
