Abstract

 
 
 La superficie forestal mundial para el 2010 comprende cuatro mil millones de hectáreas; de las cuales, sólo Rusia, Brasil, Canadá, Estados Unidos y China, poseen más de la mitad, en contraste 10 naciones no disponen de bosque alguno. Aunque la deforestación muestra señales de reducción, todavía es alarmante la conversión de selvas en cultivos. Sin embargo, pese que a causa de la disminución y degradación de los ecosistemas, la diversidad biológica está en riesgo, en múltiples países existe una tendencia hacia su conservación. Éstas son algunas de las conclusiones del informe de la FAO “Evaluación de los recursos forestales mundiales 2010” (FRA, 2010), el cual señala que en la última década se convirtieron a la agricultura anualmente 13 millones de hectáreas, en comparación con los 16 millones al año del decenio de 1990. FRA (2010) contiene datos de 233 países e integra siete elementos del desarrollo sustentable forestal: extensión de los recursos forestales, diversidad biológica, salud y vitalidad, funciones productivas, protección forestal, sociedad y economía; así como, el marco jurídico, normativo e institucional, además de tendencias de la propiedad y examina más de 90 variables y todos los tipos de biomas.
