We would like to briefly respond to Dr. Shephard's letter in the previous volume of Pediatric Exercise Science (4) regarding o& paper on the relationship between habitual physical activity and pulmonary function in Quaec youth (2).The major point of the letter was critical analysis of the paper on enhanced physical education and lung function in the Trois Rivi6res Study (3).Specifically, we indicated that it was not clear whether body size was controlled in the statistical analysis.Although Shephard et al.(3) state that "the experimental interviention had no effect on either the growth of linear dimension or body mass" (p.188) and cite a previous paper that reports this data (5), it still remains that the important issue of controlling for body size in the statistical analysis of lung function data was not clearly addressed.It is important to note that there is a distinct difference between treatment effects and intermour, comvarisons.Although the treatment (i.e., enhanced physical education) did no; influenc; growth, intergroup differences may still exist.In the pulmonary function paper (3), only stature of the urban and rural children was provided, and stature is presented graphically only for experimental and control groups of urban boys in the other paper cited (5).Although there are no statistically significant differences between experimental and control subiects.small interindividual differences should be accounted for in the statistical d , analysis of lung function variables.It is common practice in the pulmonary biology literature to either normalize lung function relative to body size, specifically stature (I), or control for body size in the analysis.Thus, our statement about the clarity of whether or not body size was controlled in the statistical analysis remains valid.Following this argument, Shephard provides alternative explanations for the discrepancy of results between the two studies in Quaec.Shephard merely reiterates two points that we allude to in our explanation of possible reasons for the lack of association between physical activity and lung function in children and adolescentsan inadequate stimulus and a critical period of alveolar development.Dr. Shephard's final point of the methodological limitations of the measurement of physical activity in youth is well-taken.The limitations of measuring physical activity in youth are recognized, and it is a reasonable assumption that the readership of the Journal understands the limitations of present methods for estimating physical activity in youth.
