Abstract
the placenta (SLC13A4) and maternal kidneys (SLC13A1) screened using DNA sequencing.Infants assessed at 3mth C.A. using General Movements assessment, and at 24mth C.A. using Bayley Scale of Infant and Toddler Development (BSITDIII).Results: To date, over 700 infants recruited.Our data support the development of sulphate deficiency in preterm infants (111Æ68 Vs 244Æ132μmol/L) and also demonstrate that antenatal MgSO 4 therapy largely mitigates this deficiency in the absence of SLC13A4 and SLC13A1 defects.Conclusions: Without antenatal sulphate provision or when genetic defects block antenatal sulphate supply to the infant before birth, preterm infants have low circulating reserves for supplying the high demands for sulphate in their developing tissues.If the neurodevelopmental assessments support our hypothesis, then we will conduct a clinical trial of neonatal sulphate supplementation.
