Pada hakekatnya manusia tidak diciptakan untuk mati, tetapi untuk hidup, sebab Allah menciptakan manusia dalam keadaan yang teramat sangat baik (sempurna). Dalam keadaannya yang sempurna, manusia sesungguhnya dapat hidup selamanya, tidak mengenal sakit-penyakit dan kematian. Tetapi karena dosa sifat manusia menjadi mortal (bisa mati), berbeda dengan Malaikat yang adalah makhluk roh (immortal) atau tidak bisa mati. Kematian jasmani merupakan hukuman Allah yang adil dan tak terelakkan terhadap dosa manusia. Hal ini diungkapkan dengan tegas oleh rasul Paulus dalam surat Roma 6:23, bahwa: ”upah dosa adalah maut” (kematian jasmani), yang mengakibatkan semua orang untuk tunduk pada kematian ”transmisi dosa atau universalitas”. Kehidupan dan kematian adalah dua realitas eksistensial yang harus dijalani oleh setiap orang (2 Sam. 1:23; Ams. 18:21). Kematian dirumuskan hakekatnya sebagai penarikan kebali nafas kehidupan atau Roh Allah dari dalam kehidupan manusia (Ayb. 34:14-15). Manusia dianggap sudah mati ketika nafas kehidupan sudah tidak ada lagi dalam tubuh (1 Raj. 17:17). Kenyataan tentang kematian ini secara tegas dituliskan dalam kitab Pengkhotbah, bahwa setiap makhluk atau manusia sama di hadapan kematian (Pkh. 2:16).
