Abstract
The principle of informed consent specifies that individuals' consent to participate in research should be based on as full an understanding as possible of the purpose, parameters, risks, benefits, and outcomes of the study. Anthropological approaches to research, however, raise questions about both the “informed” and “consent” elements of the concept. Pragmatically, anthropologists often work to broaden bureaucratic understandings of informed consent in order to think about what ethical implications arise for diverse interlocutors who participate in their studies, to different degrees, and at various moments in the research process.
