Abstract
Mein Großvater George Hambley vertraute diese Worte am 12. Oktober 1918 seinem Tagebuch an, zwei Tage, nachdem er die vielleicht letzte Kavallerieattacke an der Westfront überlebt hatte. In den hin und her wogenden Kämpfen in der Umgebung von Cambrai erhielten mehrere Trupps des Canadian Light Horse Regiments am 10. Oktober den Befehl, ein Gehöft in Naves anzugreifen, um die dortige Geschützstellung auszunehmen. Die vier Maschinengewehre befanden sich am oberen Ende eines langen und ansteigenden offenen Feldes ohne jedwede Deckung. Zum Angriff sammelten sich Männer und Pferde in einem großen Graben, in dem die Infanterie vor dem tödlichen Feuer Schutz gesucht hatte. Mit großer Anstrengung mühten sich die Pferde den steilen Hang hinauf und über die Kuppe. George und sein Pferd Nix schafften es kaum fünfzig Meter, bis eine Kugel die Stirn des treuen Tiers zerschlug.
