Abstract
We have been engaged for some time in publishing translations of, and arguing for the importance of, the work of V.M. Bekhterev. Because our careers have been in social psychology, the vast majority of these books and articles have been in that area. Moreover, it was in social psychology that Soviet suppression of Bekhterev's work had by far its greatest effect. Bekhterev remained a sort of half-hero during that era-his picture hung in university lecture halls, students learned of the brain centers he had isolated and named, but his social-psychological writing and research were not discussed, or even acknowledged, in Soviet books and journals or those published in the satellites of the former USSR. This seems to have been subsequently remedied: for example, selected social-psychological works by Bekhterev were published in Russia in 1994 (Bekhterev, 1994). It is also of interest to note that Bekhterev's social-psychological works and his reflexology concept have been used as grounds for building mathematical models of social-psychic processes, i.e., of "reflexogenesis" (e.g., Guts, 1998).
