Abstract
Die Biographie von David Easton sieht — im Gegensatz zu der vieler anderer Sozialwissenschaftler in der damaligen Zeit — eher unspektakulär aus: 1917 in Toronto geboren, blieb er dort bis zu seinem Masterabschluss 1943. Anschließend besuchte er die Harvard University, wo er 1947 promovierte. Noch im selben Jahr übernahm er eine Stelle als Assistant Professor an der Universität Chicago, wo er bis 1982 lehrte (ab 1955 als Professor). Dann ging er an die University of California in Irvine, wo er noch heute lehrt. Während dieser sehr geordneten akademischen Laufbahn erhielt Easton eine Reihe von Ehrungen. So war er etwa 1969 Präsident der American Political Science Association, die 1996 zu seinen Ehren auch einen David-Easton-Award fir Politische Theorie einrichtete. Der Schlüssel zur bahnbrechenden Bedeutung seiner Arbeiten ist mithin weniger in diesem knappen biographischen Abriss zu suchen als im intellektuellen Kontext der Zeit unmittelbar nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in den Sozialwissenschaften und insbesondere in der Politikwissenschaft in den USA (2.2.) und in der zeitlichen Entwicklung von Eastons Arbeiten (2.3.).
