Abstract
I begin with an apology. It is reasonable to expect a reviewer to fulfill at least two requirements with respect to the work under review. First, he should have some independent knowledge of the topic. Second, he should be capable of some critical distance from it. I fear that this text may instead read more like a student précis: a rather unimaginative, if fairly accurate, summary of a book’s contents, including a number of direct quotes that might seem overlong, were they not at once so trenchant, so important, and so nearly unprecedented. All this because, on the one hand, virtually all I know of the cultural dynamics of the Partition of India is what I learned in this volume, while on the other hand, its author has given us a book that instantiates what I take to be my own, careerlong project, at least in its broadest formulation: namely, to examine […] the possibilities of affiliation between two seemingly distinct intellectual trajectories within contemporary culture—on one side, the critique of colonial and postcolonial culture as a global formation, a critique that is at least a century old in its modern form but has been given a new shape and new turn in the last quarter-century, and, on the other, the critique of European modernity from the perspective of the question of Jewish existence, inextricable at this point from the history of philosophy, theory, and criticism in the twentieth century.
