RÉSUMÉ Dans le Journal des Faux-monnayeurs, à côté des réflexions théoriques suscitées par le chantier romanesque, sont insérés des textes narratifs dépourvus de caractère réflexif — anecdotes, choses vues, faits divers… — dont le statut est celui de documents génétiques : « sources », pistes abandonnées… Un seul texte échappe à ce dispositif, l'entrée du 5 mars 1923, consacrée pour l'essentiel à un récit de rêve mettant en scène Gide en visite chez Proust. Le contexte de publication invite à le lire comme une façon indirecte de se situer vis-à-vis du romancier récemment disparu. Dans quelle mesure est-on autorisé à interpréter ce récit comme un dispositif allégorique où se dirait obliquement la conception gidienne du roman? Quels sont les enjeux d'un tel recours à l'allégorie? Qu'est-il susceptible de nous apprendre sur les spécificités d'une poétique des praticiens? La poétique gidienne du roman est sans doute moins à chercher dans les aphorismes du Journal des Faux-monnayeurs que dans une certaine façon de se dégager des influences, dans la souplesse avec laquelle Gide circule d'une « source » à l'autre, veillant à ce que le lecteur ne s'arrête à aucune, constituant ainsi en poétique la mobilité d'un mode de vie.
