Abstract
Le centenaire de la Première Guerre mondiale a été souligné par de nombreuses parutions, dont beaucoup reflètent les tendances en historiographie, à savoir l’étude des commémorations et des représentations, et d’autres problèmes d’histoire culturelle (ici l’humour). Parallèlement, le genre des souvenirs personnels et des lettres d’individus plus ou moins anonymes connaît une popularité grandissante. C’est aussi le cas au Québec. Trois ouvrages sous revue, d’abord critiqués chacun pour soi, spécialement du point de vue des sources employées, sont ensuite placés dans le contexte de cette historiographie. Enfin, à la lumière d’une offre de sources devenues vraiment exceptionnelle, il est jugé opportun de reprendre certaines questions, comme la conscription et le volontariat, ou le difficile problème de l’endurance aux souffrances propres à la guerre des tranchées, ou les rapports entre les soldats et leurs familles.
