Abstract
N om enclature of Hem oglobinsThe 10th International Congress of Haematology, Stockholm, 1964, included in its program a session on Nomenclature of Abnormal Hemoglobins.Herein the recommen dations made at informal meetings of interested workers in the field during the previous congresses of the International Society of Haematology in Tokyo, 1960, and Mexico City, 1962, were considered.The following reccomendations were accepted unanimously:1. Analysis of the amino acid sequence of the globin molecule has now led to a precise chemical nomenclature elaborated by the 'Hemoglobin Structure Workshop ', Boston, December 1960 (1).This nomenclature is recommended to members of the International Society of Haematology, with the exception that the names of the poly peptide chains of normal human hemoglobin should be a, fi, y, and <5, and not aA, /iA, y1' , and <5A>.However, in order to clarify a particular situation such as a hybridization experiment, the superscripts may be used.2. The letters A through Q_ (except B) and S are recognized as naming the hemo globins to which they were allotted.For the time being the remaining letters of the alphabet should not be used for describing new hemoglobins which should now be named after localities.It should be left to the individual workers to choose the most meaningful name from the origin of the propositus, or the laboratory, hospital, town or district where the hemoglobin was found.In the future the name of a locality should not be used twice (e.g.H b Hopkins-1 and Hopkins-2).3. If an unknown hemoglobin is examined by all appropriate methods and found to be identical to one previously described it should be identified by the already establish ed capital letter or name.Every effort should be made to compare a newly found hemo globin with those previously described before assigning a new name.If subsequently two hemoglobins are found to be identical, only the name given in the first description should be retained.4. Some letters describe a group of hemoglobins with identical electrophoretic pro perties.If the abnormal polypeptide chain has been identified this may be indicated (e. g.Hb D a, Hb D f} ; Hb G a, Hb G/3).If required for identification the origin should also be noted (e.g.Hb G a Philadelphia, Hb G a Norfolk, Hb G p San José, Hb G 0 Accra).Subscripts (e.g.Hb D /Slos Angeles) are no longer used.5. The nomenclature for the hemoglobins M should be the same as that for other hemoglobins designated by capital letters (e.g.Hb M a Boston, Hb M f} Saskatoon).6.The nomenclature for abnormal hemoglobins A, and F respectively should be similar to that for the hemoglobin A variants.The capital should be followed by a description of the aberrant chain-e.g.Hb A2 ô Flatbush, Hb A2 a I, Hb A2 a M Iwate, Hb A ,a G Philadelphia, Hb A ,a G Norfolk, Hb A2 a Beilinson; Hb F y Roma, Hb F a I, Hb F a M Iwate, Hb F a G Philadelphia, Hb F a Norfolk, Hb F a Beilinson.7. The hybrid hemoglobins formed by abnormal a2 and yS2 subunits should be designated by the names of the abnormal hemoglobins with which they share their abnormailty (e.g.Hb a\ H b I/C).8. The expressions /?4 for hemoglobin H and y4 for hemoglobin Bart's may be used when they are felt to be appropriate.9.The terms a-and ^-thalassemia may be used when they arc felt to be appro priate.
