Abstract
Cet article propose d’interroger un singulier témoin du bagne de Rochefort : la pendule du forçat. Autour de cet objet, exposé au musée de la marine à Rochefort, deux points de vue sont confrontés.Le premier point de vue consiste à replacer la pendule dans le cadre muséal. Rapport au lieu bien sûr, marqué par l’intérêt d’une ville qui redécouvre son passé. Rapport au musée surtout qui s’interroge sur la place du bagne portuaire dans ses collections ; ce qui amène, en prenant du recul, à réfléchir à ses fonctions et à ses modalités. Concernant la pendule, cela revient ainsi à se demander comment adapter le récit aux attentes du public tout en y intégrant les dernières avancées scientifiques.Le second point de vue consiste à replacer la pendule dans l’histoire de l’horloger François Dubois, forçat détenu au bagne de Rochefort au début du XIXe siècle. En effet, cette pendule a bien été fabriquée à Rochefort par le forçat Dubois. Cependant des trouvailles inédites remettent en cause les anecdotes jusqu’alors véhiculées sur cette pendule pour laisser place à une histoire, au final, bien plus rocambolesque que la légende tout en renouvelant notre regard sur le quotidien de l’institution d’enfermement. Découvertes archivistiques et réflexions sur la médiation d’un sujet sensible conduisent à repenser tout un pan de l’histoire du bagne et le discours de sa transmission.
