This paper does not propose to be medically technical nor does it represent a Shell Nigeria view of in-house HIV/AIDS treatment. It intends to promote debate by highlighting some of the issues which need to be considered before an in-house HIV treatment programme can be implemented. Many companies are now developing HIV/AIDS policies and guidelines in which company sponsored comprehensive highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART) for HIV/AIDS is considered. The HAART option needs to sit unobtrusively as part of the overall company HIV/AIDS strategy that may include building partnerships with government and using the company infrastructure to increase awareness in the local population. An HAART programme needs to be continuously evaluated not only by the Company Medical Department but also by Management. HIV/AIDS is increasingly seen as a critical business issue and has to be managed as such with clearly defined roles and responsibilities, targets and systematic reviews.
