Abstract
O estudo apresentado trata da forma como a morte é \nentendida no contexto\nhospitalar junto dos profissionais, e como eles vêem o \nprocesso de fim de vida de\nseus doentes. Descobrir se existe humanização no cuidar e \nse o tratamento\noferecido nos hospitais concede ao doente respeito e \ndignidade pela sua situação,\nforam os objetivos da pesquisa. Foi realizada no Serviço \nde Oncologia do\nHospital de Santa Maria da Feira, em Portugal, junto de 6 \nprofissionais (3\nmédicos, 1 enfermeira, 1 psicóloga e 1 assistente social). \nO que se observou é que\na morte é entendida como algo inevitável, um processo de \naceitação para uns, e\numa derrota e frustração para outros. No entanto, por \nparte dos profissionais não\nse observa desprezo ou afastamento em relação ao doente. \nOutra observação foi o\nfato de não existir um assistente social permanente no \nserviço, o que constitui um\nlapso na equipe multidisciplinar existente. A comunicação, \na solidariedade, bem\ncomo a preocupação de proporcionar uma boa qualidade de \nvida que se traduz em\nautonomia, liberdade de escolha e o poder de decidir sobre \nsuas coisas, assim\ncomo conferir dignidade ao doente, mostraram ser as \nprioridades dos profissionais\ndeste serviço.
