Abstract
The pervasive claim that we have become an urban world for the first time in human history holds radical challenges for the field of international politics, which assumes a political world structured by states and their relations. While diverse research into “global/urban/politics” tends to focus on temporal and spatial redefinitions of the city, the urban, the rural, and the global, this forum focuses on the political assumptions and productions embedded in claims about this new global urban condition. We offer a set of resources for developing political analyses within this contemporary urban condition, and a provocation to think about the serious political complications of this claim. Most importantly, we make explicit the implications of these analyses for scholars concerned with world politics more generally. We argue, from divergent perspectives and sites, that the global urban is a problem of political production (Magnusson 2011) that requires rethinking the very definitions and assumptions of politics. We therefore engage a set of crucial but under-theorized problematics that arise from claims about a “new” urban world: the ways in which “the global/urban” requires, enables, and restricts new approaches to theorizing international and global politics; the ways in which practices, forms, and spacetimes of global urban politics both undermine and reinscribe sovereignty in subtle and unexpected ways; and the ways in which these narratives of transformation are politically productive and counter-productive.
