Abstract

Neonatal seizures are the most common clinical symptom of cerebral dysfunction in newborns. Refractory seizures are associated with high mortality rates and poor neurological outcome in close relation with etiological factors. As improvements in neonatology have increased the newborn survival rates and advanced investigation techniques have helped discover different etiologic factors, seizure risks have numerically increased. Neurological sequelae associated with neonatal seizures are cognitive impairments, cerebral movement disorders and epileptic seizures. The most important objektifectives of the studies performed in this field have included better comprehension of pathophysiology of neonatal convulsions, prenatal, natal and postnatal risk factors associated with neurodevelopmental problems, their involvement in brain damage, and their roles in the prediction of prognosis.
