Territorios sustentables: legitimando la conservación en reservas de biosfera

Abstract
Las reservas de biosfera constituyen una propuesta de manejo que aspira reconciliar múltiples tipos de uso de suelo en una superficie representativa de la diversidad ecológica y cultural del planeta. Entre sus objetivos está precautelar la integridad ecológica de áreas núcleo dedicadas a la conservación, lo cual en definitiva implica considerar los requerimientos de las poblaciones humanas que albergan. Este ensayo postula que para legitimar la conservación en reservas de biosfera es necesario lograr la activación de dos procesos distintivos: sustentabilidad y territorialización. En otras palabras, las reservas de biosfera deben ser consideradas como territorios sustentables si han de servir sus propósitos conservacionistas. En este caso, la sustentabilidad ambiental se logra asegurando la provisión de servicios ecosistémicos mediante el establecimiento de paisajes multifuncionales, mientras que la sustentabilidad social implica la institucionalización de procesos sociales. Además, se debe consolidar la apropiación territorial de las reservas por parte de sus habitantes. Al lograrse conjuntamente, la sustentabilidad ambiental, la sustentabilidad social y la apropiación territorial permitirían que las reservas de biosfera se puedan convertir en territorios sustentables, apuntalando de esa manera sus funciones de conservación de la naturaleza.
